Awning Installation: What to Expect
An awning is only as safe as the wall it hangs on. Here is how professional installers fit one – and what to ask before they start.

A large awning can weigh 40–80kg, and when it is open the wind multiplies the load on its brackets many times over. Fitting it properly – into sound masonry, with the right anchors – is the single most important part of the job.
Most professional installations take between half a day and a day once the awning has been made. The work itself is quick; the expertise lies in assessing the wall and choosing the right fixings.
The survey
Before ordering, a good installer will visit to measure the wall and patio, check the height available, look for obstructions such as windows, downpipes and lights, and establish what the wall is made of. They will also discuss where the power supply will come from for an electric awning.
Expect them to ask about cavity wall insulation and render, and to drill a test hole if they are unsure what is behind the surface.

Fixing to different walls
The fixing method depends on the construction of the house. Each type of wall needs a different approach, and this is where cheap installations most often go wrong.
- Solid brick or stone – heavy-duty brackets on resin (chemical) anchors or long through-bolts
- Cavity walls – resin anchors with mesh sleeves, set deep into the outer leaf, or through-fixings where needed
- Render or external insulation – stand-off brackets or long anchors that pass through the soft layer into solid masonry
- Timber-framed or weak walls – roof or rafter brackets, or a free-standing frame
- Soffits and ceilings – ceiling brackets for awnings under balconies or overhangs
Power, finishing and handover
For an electric awning, a registered electrician will provide an outdoor switched spur near the motor, with weatherproof fittings and RCD protection. The installer then sets the motor limits so the awning stops in the right position, pairs any remotes and sensors, and adjusts the pitch.
At handover you should be shown how to operate the awning, how to use the manual override if there is one, and what the guarantee covers. Ask for the product details and any electrical certificate in writing.
Typical installation costs
| Job | Typical UK price |
|---|---|
| Fitting a customer-supplied awning up to 4m | £250–£500 |
| Fitting a customer-supplied awning over 4m | £400–£700 |
| Stand-off or rafter brackets (supply and fit) | £100–£350 |
| Outdoor electrical supply for the motor | £150–£400 |
Indicative UK prices. Most installers include fitting in the price of an awning they supply; access equipment for high fixings is extra.

Awning installation: common questions
Can I fit an awning myself?
Small, lightweight awnings can be fitted by a competent DIYer, but larger awnings are heavy and must be anchored correctly. A professional fitting also protects your guarantee.
Can an awning be fitted to a rendered wall?
Yes. The installer will use fixings long enough to pass through the render and any insulation into the solid wall behind, or stand-off brackets to spread the load.
How long does awning installation take?
Usually half a day to a day. Electrical work, high fixings or unusual brackets can extend that slightly.
Will installing an awning damage my wall?
Correctly fitted, no. The brackets leave a few drilled holes, which can be filled and painted if the awning is ever removed.
