Quotes from Local Plumbers

Planned work or a problem that has been dripping for weeks – tell us what you need and compare quotes from plumbers near you.

Plumber fitting a waste trap beneath a basin

Plumbers cover a wide range of work, from swapping a tap to plumbing in an entire new bathroom. Some also work on heating systems and boilers, but only engineers on the Gas Safe Register are legally allowed to work on gas appliances.

For planned jobs such as a bathroom refit or moving a radiator, comparing a few quotes is the best way to find someone reliable at a fair price. Include photos of the existing set-up and the brand of any boiler or cylinder – it saves time on both sides.

Plumbing jobs covered

Bathroom and shower plumbing

First and second fix for a new bathroom, shower installations, wet rooms and replacing sanitaryware.

Leaks and repairs

Dripping taps, leaking pipes, faulty valves, running toilets and water in places it should not be.

Radiators and heating

Moving or replacing radiators, adding thermostatic valves, powerflushing and balancing the system.

Boilers and gas work

Boiler replacement, servicing and repairs by Gas Safe registered engineers only.

Outside taps and garden supplies

Outside taps with a double check valve, supplies to garden rooms and frost protection.

Kitchen plumbing

Sinks, dishwashers, washing machines and moving pipework for a kitchen refit.

Planned work versus emergencies

For a burst pipe or a serious leak, turn off the water at the internal stopcock – often under the kitchen sink – and call a plumber straight away. Emergency call-outs are priced differently from planned work, so the quotes you compare here are best suited to jobs that can wait a few days.

If your boiler is losing pressure, making unusual noises or you can smell gas, stop using it. For a suspected gas leak, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before anything else.

Gas Safe, water regulations and cylinders

  • It is a legal requirement that anyone working on gas appliances in the UK is on the Gas Safe Register. You can check an engineer's registration and the type of work they are qualified for on the Gas Safe Register website, and every engineer carries an ID card.
  • Unvented hot water cylinders must be installed and maintained by someone with the appropriate qualification (often called G3).
  • Plumbing work must also comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations. Plumbers who belong to an approved contractor scheme, such as those listed on WaterSafe, can certify their work.

Typical plumbing prices

Broad UK ranges for common jobs. Plumbers usually charge by the job for planned work and by the hour for fault finding.

Before you choose a plumber

  • For any gas work, check the engineer on the Gas Safe Register
  • Ask whether the quote is fixed or based on an hourly rate
  • Confirm who supplies the parts and whether there is a mark-up
  • Ask about guarantees on workmanship and manufacturer warranties
  • Check public liability insurance

Plumbers: frequently asked questions

Can a plumber fit a new boiler?

Only if they are on the Gas Safe Register for that type of appliance. Many plumbers are also Gas Safe heating engineers, but not all are, so always check.

How much does a plumber charge to fix a leak?

It depends on where the leak is and how easy it is to reach. A simple leaking joint may be fixed within the first hour, whereas a leak under a tiled floor could take much longer. Ask for the hourly rate and minimum charge.

How long does it take to plumb a new bathroom?

A standard bathroom refit typically takes one to two weeks in total, of which the plumbing is spread across first fix (before walls are closed up) and second fix (connecting the suite).

Do I need permission to add an outside tap?

No planning permission is needed, but the tap should include a double check valve to prevent contamination of the mains supply, as required by the water regulations.
