Driveway Gates
Security, privacy and kerb appeal in one. Get quotes for timber, metal and electric driveway gates from local installers.

Driveway gates are a bigger project than a garden gate. They are wide, heavy and exposed to the wind, so they need substantial posts or brick pillars, strong hinges and – if they are automated – a power supply and safety devices. Getting the groundwork right is what stops them from sagging or catching on the drive after a year or two.
When you request quotes, give the width of the opening, whether the drive slopes, what the gate posts or pillars are made of now, and whether you want manual or electric gates.
Timber or metal driveway gates?
Timber gates – often hardwood such as iroko or oak, or treated softwood – suit cottages, farmhouses and homes with timber fencing, and can be fully boarded for privacy. They need re-oiling or staining every year or two.
Metal gates in steel or wrought iron are strong, slimmer and suit period and modern houses alike. Galvanising before powder coating gives the best protection against rust. Aluminium gates are light, so they are kind to automation motors.

Swing or sliding, manual or electric
Swing gates are the most common, but they need space on the drive to open – and a level or gently sloping drive, or gates that open outwards over the pavement are not allowed. Sliding gates work well on sloping drives and short driveways, provided there is room for the gate to run alongside the boundary.
Electric gates add convenience and security. Automation should be installed to the relevant safety standards, with photocells or safety edges to stop the gates closing on a person or car.
- Underground or ram-arm motors for swing gates
- Track-mounted motors for sliding gates
- Keypads, intercoms, remote fobs and smartphone control
- Photocells and safety edges to prevent entrapment
Planning permission for driveway gates
In England, gates, fences and walls next to a road used by vehicles (or a footpath beside it) are usually permitted development up to 1 metre high. Taller gates at the front of a property typically need planning permission, as do gates on listed buildings. Rules differ slightly in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so check with the local planning authority.
Typical driveway gate costs

| Steel or wrought iron gates, supplied and fitted | £1,800–£5,000 |

Indicative UK prices. New brick pillars, groundworks for sliding gates and running power to the gates are usually priced separately.

Driveway gates: common questions
Can driveway gates open outwards?
Gates should not open outwards over a public footpath or highway. If your drive slopes up from the road, a sliding gate or bi-fold gates may be the practical answer.
How long do electric gates take to install?
Once gates and posts are in place, automation is typically installed in one to two days. Allow extra time if cable ducts need to be dug across the drive.
Do electric gates need servicing?
Yes. An annual service checks the motors, safety devices and settings. It is important for safety as well as reliability.
Do I need planning permission for driveway gates?
In many cases, gates over 1 metre high next to a road need planning permission. Check with your local council before ordering.
