Fence Repair & Replacement

Leaning posts, a panel lost in a storm or a fence that is simply past it – get quotes to repair or replace it properly.

Weathered timber gate with a broken board in need of repair

Most fence problems start at ground level. Timber posts rot where they meet the soil, the fence begins to lean, and the next strong wind finishes the job. The good news is that a lot of damage is repairable, especially if you catch it early.

When you request a quote, send a few photos of the whole fence as well as the damaged section. A contractor can often tell straight away whether a repair makes sense or whether the rest of the fence is likely to follow soon.

Common fence repairs

The most frequent call-outs are for posts that have snapped or rotted at the base, panels blown out of their slots, broken gravel boards and loose or split feather edge boards. Gates that drop or will not latch are often part of the same job.

  • Replacing rotten or snapped timber posts with timber or concrete
  • Refitting or replacing storm-damaged panels
  • Repair spurs to support a sound post with a rotten base
  • Replacing individual feather edge boards and arris rails
  • Re-hanging and adjusting sagging gates

Repair or replace? How to decide

If one or two posts have failed but the rest of the fence is sound, a repair is almost always the sensible option. If several posts are leaning, the panels are soft or the fence is more than 15 years old, you may find yourself paying for repeated call-outs – at which point fence replacement is often better value.

Replacing the posts with slotted concrete posts while keeping good panels can be a useful halfway house, and it means future panel repairs take minutes rather than hours.

Storm damage and insurance

Many home insurance policies exclude fences, or only cover them in limited circumstances such as a named storm. Check your policy before assuming you are covered, and take photos of the damage before anything is cleared away. If you are claiming, ask your fencing contractor for an itemised quote.

Who is responsible for a boundary fence?

Responsibility is often shown on your property's title plan or deeds, sometimes with a "T" mark on the side of the boundary that belongs to each house. If the deeds are silent, speak to your neighbour – most boundary fence repairs are resolved by agreement and sharing the cost.

Typical fence repair costs

Typical fence repair costs
JobTypical UK price
Replacing one timber or concrete post£150–£300
Fitting a concrete repair spur£80–£160
Replacing a single panel£120–£250
Replacing a run of 10m of fencing£900–£1,800

Indicative UK prices. Many contractors have a minimum charge for small repairs, so grouping several jobs into one visit is often better value.

Fence repair: common questions

Can a leaning fence be straightened?

Sometimes. If the post is sound but the footing has moved, it can be re-set or supported with a repair spur. If the post has rotted at the base, it needs replacing.

How quickly can a fence be repaired after a storm?

After major storms, local fencing contractors can be booked up for weeks. Getting several quotes quickly gives you the best chance of an early slot.

Is it worth replacing timber posts with concrete?

For panel fencing, usually yes. Concrete posts do not rot and make future panel replacement easy. They are heavier, so installation takes a little more work.

Who pays for a shared fence repair?

It depends on who owns the boundary, which is often shown in the deeds. If ownership is unclear, neighbours commonly agree to split the cost.
